Display Prep

Getting ready for our big exhibition weekend on 11th - 13th October at Pickering Scout Hut. Its the towns annual War Weekend Event and our main fundraiser with some great items on display.

This week we were given alot of Scouting memorabillia belonging to the late Marjorie Marshall who was the Akela for many years at 1st Vale of Pickering also in Goole, she gained here wood badge in 1956 by doing the relevant training at Gilwell Park, we are fortunate enough to have her Gilwell scarf, woggle and letter from John Thurman. She was awarded the Medal of Merit for her services to Scouting and when she retired from her group role as Akela in the 1970s she took on district roles later to become Ryedale District President and a member of Scout Fellowship. among the items donate are some letters to her late husband who was District Commissioner and Scout Master at 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Troop for a short period.

Scouting Fact

  The gold cord Bushman’s thong was introduced in January 1952 as due to the war there was a shortage of leather. The gold thong was in use for about 4 years before HQ reverted back to the leather.

Online Uniform Exhibition

As part of our online exhibition Project, here you can see a small portion of the Scout Uniforms that the Archives holds, focusing on the scout uniforms. Wolf Cub Uniforms will follow when photographed. You can see a massive difference between these uniforms and the uniform Scouts wear today.

This 1950s Senior Scout Uniform and belt belonged to the Present GSL at Pickering when he was a Scout in Wallasey in th 1950s where he gained his Queen's Scout Badge. Also Pictured a Mallet that was used by him with Nickname 'TAFFY' branded on the shaft.

Ryedale Folk Museum Exhibition

The Archives is currently holding an exhibition at Ryedale Folk Museum which has run since the 7th June and will be on show for a further week. On show is an early scout uniform from 1st Helmsley Scout Group dating from around 1915 and some various Scouting books and badges.

Today the archives held a display at Pickering Community Day. We had lots of interest and some donations a great day all round. The displays were on the History of the 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Group through photographs. with the Raymond Hey Collection making up the bulk of it.

Great Donation

This week saw a wonderful donation of Scouting books dating from the early 1920s and an order of service for the thanksgiving service that was held at the 1929 World Jamboree, a near complete Companoid first aid kit. 2 Cub caps and lots of other great books. Photos to follow. These items were donated by a great supporter of the Archives and past Group Scout Leader and a life long scout.

Archive talk

Had a good afternoon giving a talk to the Womans group at Pickering Methodist Chapel. Coverd many aspects of the history of local and national Scouting and met the old Wolf Cub Leader 'Baloo' who was with the Cub Pack in the 1960s.

2nd Crosshill Scouts

A very interesting early photograph of 2nd Crosshills Scout Troop, note the lad 2nd from right back, he is wearing the Silver Wolf, Scouts that gained all Proficiency Badges were awarded the Silver Wolf before it became an adult award. Also the lad 2nd from right middle row and the lad 1st left back row proudly showing their King's Scout Badges.

latest Donations

Charles Macleans full name was Charles Hector Fitzroy Maclean, Baron Maclean, he was awarded many medals and honours including the KBE and the Bronze Wolf the only award  made by the WOSM.  He was Lord Chamberlain to HM Queen Elizabeth II from 1971 to 1984 and Sadly passing away on 8th February 1990

The BSA Collection

The recently aquired Boy Scouts of America Collection contains mostly order of the arrow items from around the 1950s, with an Eagle Scout Woggle, photographs from an American jamboree 1957, merit badge certificates, various neckers and a water container stamped with the BSA crest. these items are a great start to the new international collection branch of the archives.
