Archive Name Tapes

The New Archive Name Tapes arrived today, these tapes will be sewn into the collars of the uniform we have in the collection and any items on loan e.g Hats, Neckerchiefs or flags.

Restoration Work

Just completed a bit of Restoration work on this early felt Rover Scout Epaulette, a little bit more time to be spent on them and it will be as good as new.

Camp fire Blanket

This Camp Fire Blanket is being created as part of a proposed exhibition of Camp Fire Blankets through time, this one is a 1940s/50s/60s style and tells a story of a scouts life through the stages of Scouting going from Wolf Cubs though to Rover Scouts. The style of Camp Fire Blanket has change throughout the years where as now we usually have a throw over your head blanket, in years gone by they were works of art. As you can see this one has my woodcraft sign on it and tells the story of my life through scouting, I have tried to get the 1940s equivalent badges to what I earned when I was a youth member in the 2000s. Watch this space for the completed blanket and a first look at a very special and very limited edition badge set.

Good day collecting

Good day out today and this little lot was from one antique centre! Sadly I don't know who they are in the photographs, the group photo is very early as the scouts aren't wearing woggles and the photo with the trek cart piled high is 1950s as 2 are wearing berets.

War weekend 2014

Well that's another War Weekend gone and lots of very interesting scouting chin wags, many nostalgic memories shared. A big thanks to this years addition of the Thane Rover Crew who came to demonstrate 1940s camp craft and scouting.

Archive Fact

A little fact I found out today about the North Riding Badge- it was originally red with writing and the rose but the red colour could not be obtained during the Second World War so it changed to maroon and returned to its original red colour in the early 1950s  and when the county boundaries changed in the 1970s it changed from a ribbon badge to a woven bound North Yorkshire Badge we have today.
