George H Cooper started his scouting life in 1923 when he joined the 43^rd Salford Wolf Cub Pack, when George was 11 he moved up to the 2^nd Eccles scout troop in 1924 until 1929 when George moved up to the 2^nd and 5^th Eccles Rover scout crew during his time at Eccles he took a warrant to become a senior scout master, up until 1949 George and the Cooper family moved to Urmston when he took the role of Senior Scout Master at 2^nd Urmston Scout Group. In 1951 he went to Gilwell Park to do his wood badge training when he completed the training and George was awarded his Wood Beads in the same year of 1951 the same year George became the Group Scout Master of 2^nd Urmston in 2^nd July 1952 the role of District Scout Master for Urmston and Flixton. 1951 until 1959 he was the assistant warden of Dunham Forest Scout Camp site Mrs Elizabeth Cooper (George’s wife) occasionally ran the site shop then known as a providor, in 1954 until 1956 he became the Scout Master at 10^th Salford (Dock Mission). In 1962 George became a Senior Scout Master for the second time at the 1^st Cadishead up until 1970 when he was appointed Assistant District Commissioner for South Anglesey then George was promoted to assistant County Commissioner for South Anglesey until 1973. In 1973 until 1977 George became District Commissioner for South Anglesey of the district of Gwynedd. During this time George became a BP Scout Guild organiser and George was also on the organising team for the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme. In April 1976 George was awarded a long service award and the Medal of Merit. In 1978 George became the chairman of the south Anglesey scout district council. In 1982 having moved to Pickering where he settled up until his death in 1987 he was an active member and the chairman of the 1^st Vale of Pickering Scout Group.

New Display at Ryedale Folk Museum

Just installed the latest small display at Ryedale Folk Museum for the Games in the Park event this Weekend (18th-19th Aug) the display is on a Scouting Games theme with books uniform badges and photographs. Also included are some 1930s board games and table games. So come and see it as it is on for a short period until Wednesday 22nd August. Today I installed the archives latest display at Malton Hospital in the Fitzwilliam ward reception. In partnership with the Ryedale Folk Museum.

An exhibition dedicated to the history of the Scouting movement has gone on show at a museum in Yorkshire.

Beck Isle Museum in Pickering will be showing a number of items showcasing over 100 years of Scout history including more than 50 badges, reports the York Press.

Richard Bowman, who put the collection together, is a member of the 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Group and used the local faction as a basis for looking at the entire organisation.

He told the news provider: "I actually found out that the group was founded in 1910 and the cub pack was founded in 1914 which makes use of one of the first Cub packs."

Mr Bowman has also written a book about the history of his Scout Group, which accompanies the exhibition.

Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scout movement in 1907, which has always had an emphasis on outdoor activities and practical skills with those involved collecting badges to prove their proficiency in these tasks.

Scouts memorabilia goes on show at Beck Isle Museum, Pickering,

A NEW season has been launched at Beck Isle Museum in Pickering, with a new exhibition on the history of Scouting.
The display has been put together by Richard Bowman, a member of the 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Group. Richard, 17, who is also a volunteer at Beck Isle and an apprentice at Ryedale Folk Museum, has been involved with the Scouts all his life and collects items from various events and jamborees.
He became increasingly interested in memorabilia after doing some research on his Scout group. “I actually found out that the group was founded in 1910 and the cub pack was founded in 1914 which makes use of one of the first Cub packs,” he said.
“Since then I have had a number of displays in different places.
“I organised a Scout Show and a Back To Basics camp and I wrote a book on the history of the group.”
Richard said his collection now included a full set of 1929 World Jamboree newspapers and more than 50 badges, many dating back almost 100 years.

 The latest Display at Beck isle museum lasting for a month. The display is on the history of Scouting in Ryedale. Installed Tuesday 7th February. Beck isle will be opening later this month. This is the first of many displays and assosiations with Beck Isle and the Archives.

I have just recieved the minutes from all executive commity meetings from the begining of the District in 1949, AGM items, District campsite information, census forms and a book containing names of scouters in the district from the early days. It all makes very good reading and is a great addition to the Display of Ryedale in February.

Cubs when they won the District quiz

Today I have been putting together some objects for a Display I am doing at the Beck isle Museum in February. The display is on Scouting in Ryedale. I think I have just about got it all together. Ive been ironing old uniforms,  flattening crinkled newspaper clippings and doing write ups for the objects. All in all its been a productive day, this display will be the first of its kind there hasn't been a display on Ryedale of my knowledge to date. I'll keep you informed of when the Display is on.

The TIC Display

A Display at the local TIC on the history of 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Group focusing on the centenary of the group. The display ran for a couple of weeks till the leadup to the group show at the local theatre.

All comments were Good during and after the display also we got some publicity for the group.
