New Display at Ryedale Folk Museum

Just installed the latest small display at Ryedale Folk Museum for the Games in the Park event this Weekend (18th-19th Aug) the display is on a Scouting Games theme with books uniform badges and photographs. Also included are some 1930s board games and table games. So come and see it as it is on for a short period until Wednesday 22nd August. This week has been a good week for amazing finds. A 1st Keswick Scout Group flag complete with pole and finial. A Boy Scout hat and a collection of 1940s early 50s Scouting items belonging to one Scout - A uniform with a printed Kings Scout Badge, Record Cards with Rowallan's signature on the Senior Scout Record Card, a Print of BP in a frame, a selection of photographs a few from a kings scout parade at Windsor reviewed by the Queen Mother (then Queen Elizabeth), 30 various District and County Badges, a Weatherman's Badge, Scouting Books and a few more interesting items.

Story of Scouting Visit

Sunday 6th May saw the archives visiting the Story of Scouting and Story of Guiding Museum at Waddacer Scout camp. I highly recomend it to anyone involved in Scouting. My thanks to Mr Loomes for showing us around the museum. A truly grand day out.

Today I installed the archives latest display at Malton Hospital in the Fitzwilliam ward reception. In partnership with the Ryedale Folk Museum.

New Arrivals

These are the newly acquired part of the collection, a collection within its self, looks to me that this is a combined effort with different objects belong to what i am assuming two brothers - R.C Mepsted and M. Mepsted members of a Greater London South Troop. the only thing i don't understand is that the membership Badge is a 1970s 80s nylon badge ??? on a 50s uniform. unfortunately i can not identify what troop/Group the belonged to as the name tape is missing probably on a campfire blanket.

Come and explore scout exhibition at Beck Isle Museum in Pickering - Wednesday 22nd February 2012

A NEW season has been launched at Beck Isle Museum in Pickering with a special exhibition on the history of scouting.
The display has been put together by Richard Bowman, a member of the 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Group.
Richard, who is also a volunteer at Beck Isle and an apprentice at Ryedale Folk Museum, has been involved with the scouts all his life and started collecting items from various events and jamborees as a child.
The 17-year-old became increasingly interested in memorabilia after doing some research on his Scout group.

“I actually found out that the group was founded in 1910 and the Cub pack was founded in 1914 which makes us one of the first Cub packs,” he said.
“Since then I have had a number of displays in different places. During 2010 I was one of the main organiser of centenary celebrations for the group, I organised a Scout Show, A Back to Basics Camp and I wrote a book on the History of The Group as well as many other things.”
Richard said his collection now includes a full set of 1929 World Jamboree newspapers and more than 50 badges many dating back almost 100 years.
“It’s great that the two voluntary and charitable organisations can work together to produce a great display,” he said.

“I believe that we need to keep the history of the Scout movement alive as we don’t want to forget how it all began.”
